Sometimes a song changes its meaning after it has already begun.
“80th Flashback” started as an instrumental. I was simply working on the music, experimenting with sounds and ideas, as I often do. At that point, I had no particular story or person in mind.
Then I received some very sad news from a friend.
I learned that a beautiful young girl I had known in 1985 had died. She had become addicted to heroin and eventually died of AIDS, still only in her early twenties.
The news affected me deeply.
A memory from the 1980s
I had known her when she was young. I remember her as a beautiful girl from that time, and hearing years later what had happened to her was difficult to take in.
It is painful to think about how much of her life was still ahead of her.
She had become caught up in drug addiction and, according to what I was told, had been drawn into that world by people who were involved in drugs. Her life ended far too early.
I don’t want to turn her story into something sensational. For me, it is simply a sad memory of someone I once knew.
When the music became a memorial
By the time I heard the news, I was already working on the instrumental.
Suddenly, the music felt different.
What had started as another Z CAR M composition became something much more personal. I decided that “80th Flashback” should be a memorial to her — a musical remembrance of a young woman from the 1980s whose life ended far too soon.
The song became connected with memories of that period, and with the feeling of looking back at a time that can never return.
Why I called it “80th Flashback”
The title reflects that feeling of looking back into the 1980s — a time, a memory, and someone who was part of that period of my life.
It is not a happy story.
But I also didn’t want the music to be only about sadness. For me, remembering someone is also a way of keeping a small part of their memory alive.
A personal remembrance
I never intended to write a memorial song when I started working on the instrumental.
That happened afterwards.
Sometimes music does that. A piece can begin without a clear meaning, and then something happens in life that suddenly gives it one.
“80th Flashback” is my personal musical remembrance of a young girl I knew in 1985 — someone whose life ended much too soon.
Some memories stay with us.
