Z CAR M – Band Biography

Background and Name

The band name Z CAR M is derived from the surname of the bandleader and the drummer, written backwards. R.A.C.Z became Z.C.A.R, while the letter “M” stands for Melody.

Since the majority of the band’s compositions originated from the keyboardist, the name was chosen to reflect both the personal connection between the members and the melodic focus of the music. Thus, Z CAR M became a name that combined identity and artistic intent.

Formation of the Band

The actual formation of the band can be dated to August 1981. At that time, the keyboardist’s brother was already firmly established as the drummer, making collaboration a natural step based on shared musical interests.

A close friend of the bandleader also joined the project. Known for his striking appearance and unconventional presence, he inspired Bernd to explore a musical collaboration with him as well. Although the early attempts were not immediately successful, it gradually became clear that he possessed genuine musical potential, even if practical experience was still limited.

Music, Lyrics, and Influences

The music of Z CAR M was composed primarily by Bernd August Racz. Most of the lyrics were written by Karl-Heinz “Kalle” Huth, with some contributions by Bernd himself.

Vocals were shared between the two: while Bernd sang many of the songs, Kalle assumed the role of principal lead vocalist.

The band’s first song, titled “Die Stadt” (“The City”), dealt with themes of environmental destruction and social indifference. It portrayed a world in which concepts such as environmental protection were largely ignored—rivers polluted by wastewater, landscapes covered in concrete, and the systematic destruction of everything connected to nature.

Stylistically, Z CAR M can be associated with acid rock, German New Wave (Neue Deutsche Welle), and new wave. Influences from bands such as The Stranglers, The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols, and The Doors are clearly evident in both sound and attitude.

Rehearsal Phase and Development

For approximately one year, the band rehearsed in changing line-ups. This period was marked by uncertainty, personal setbacks, and the search for a shared musical identity. At times, motivation was low, and it was often unclear whether truly productive collaboration was even possible.

Compounding these difficulties was the lack of a permanent rehearsal space. Eventually, however, the band found a solution in the basement of a workshop. There, they developed around 20 songs, rehearsing them repeatedly and refining them over time.

At the end of this intensive phase, Z CAR M recorded a demo tape, which Kalle and Bernd subsequently took with them to Berlin—a significant step in the band’s ongoing evolution.
